Evaluation Theories

Approach
  • Introduce briefly the different Evaluation Models
  • Indicate the key roles of feedback and learning
  • How interpretation of learning affects evaluation approach
  • Deal with the basis of selection
Return to the models in more detail
  • Cybernetic Model
  • CIPP Model
  • Nexus Model
  • Kirkpatrick
  • Hamlin
Relate them to their assumptions and purposes

SELECTING A THEORETICAL MODEL

Evaluation is inextricably bound up with learning – both individual learning and collective learning.  Different perspectives and different theoretical models of evaluation tend, therefore, to be based on different theories of learning.
  • Evaluation based on systems learning theory
  • Evaluation based on cognitive learning theory
  • Evaluation based on social learning theory
  • Evaluation based on knowledge development theory
If evaluation is inextricably bound up with facilitating the learning process, then a key task of any evaluative process is to minimise the problems that cause dysfunctional learning situations.

Hand out 1 on Models of Learning
  • System learning
  • Cognitive learning
  • Social Learning
  • Knowledge Development
Learning style and evaluative focus
Each of these learning style models can be mapped to a corresponding evaluative focus.

Hand out 2 learning and evaluation styles
